West Point Band Chamber Recital Series
Staff Sgt. Diana Powers - Flute
Staff Sergeant Diana Powers will present
a recital of music for flute and other instruments. Several members of
the West Point Band will join her throughout the recital. Diana will
perform the music of P.D.Q. Bach, Ian Clarke, Cindy McTee and Jacob Ter
Veldhuis. The recital is free and open to the public on
Sunday, January 18th at 3:00 p.m. in the
West Point Jewish Chapel.
Shulamit Ran’s Sonatina for Two Flutes
was written when the composer was only twelve years old. By that age,
Ran had already been composing for five years, yet all of her
compositions had been for instruments she could play herself, either the
piano or the human voice. Sonatina for Two Flutes represents the
composer’s first foray into composing for other instruments. The piece
is based on Israeli folk melodies. Local flautist Bonnie Ham will join
Staff Sgt. Powers for the work.
Diana will be joined by Staff Sgt. Phil
Helm on double bass and Noriko Herndon on viola to perform Erwin
Schulhoff’s Concertino for Flute, Viola and Double Bass. Written
in 1925, the unique instrumentation of the work is intended to recall
the baroque trio sonata. The piece incorporates motives taken from
Russian Orthodox litany as well as a Beseda, the Czech national dance
and the music of a Russian bear tamer.
The final piece on Staff Sgt. Powers’
program is Lipstick by Jacob Ter Veldhuis. The composition is for
flute and tape. The tape for the piece incorporates voice samples that
deal with human relationships. The voice samples are taken from American
talk shows like “The Jerry Springer Show” as well as a sample from one
of the last interviews Billie Holiday gave.
