CRAIG S. WILLIAMS, USMA Organist / Choirmaster

A Day at the Opera and Other West Point Legacies.

September 11 marks the tenth anniversary of one of our darkest days, but many observances this year at West Point and in the arts signify the strength and resolve of our national amidst the challenges of the 21st Century.

At the beginning of the 20th Century, the monumental pipe organ in the Cadet Chapel was played in public for the first time on Nov 12, 1911 - one hundred years ago - by USMA Organist/Choirmaster Frederick C. Mayer.  Included in his program was the Prelude of Wagner's "Parsifal" signifying his love of the Romantic opera in his artistic expression and the ideals of the noble sacred quest.  Therefore this program will begin with his work, and also observe the 200th anniversary of the birth of Franz Liszt and the 50th anniversary of the passing of the English Romantic composer York Bowen (who was influenced by Wagner and Liszt).  Included in the program will be one of Liszt's many works influenced by the grandeur of the opera, his Fantasia and Fuge on "Ad nos, ad salutarem undam" (a splendid shorale from Meyerbeer's opera "Le Prophete"); also Sigfrid Karg-Elert's "operatic" setting of the chorale "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme," Sowerby's "Carillon" and York Bowen's "Fantasia for Organ."
