MX400 - Officership

What is MX400?

Purpose: The purpose of MX400 is to help cadets discover some broad insights into how they, as prospective officers, can execute their duties honorably in service to our Nation as professional Army leaders.

Intent: West Point's Capstone Course for Officership (MX 400) provides all First Class Cadets a rigorous, interdisciplinary experience to complete initial development of their own personal and professional identity, their self concept of officership, as a leader of character, a warrior, a member of the profession, and a servant to the Nation. This is a fundamental graduation requirement so they can best fulfill the trust placed in them in commanding and leading US Army Soldiers in combat.

Course Goals:
a. To hone your judgement and refine your decision making ability across the domains of expert knowledge.

b. To broaden your perspective on the expanding scope of responsibilities and expertise required during a career in the profession of arms.

c. To develop a distinctive professional outlook based on an Officer's (vice cadet's) way of thinking that is firmly grounded upon a synthesis of battle command, military professionalism and military leadership concepts.

d. To stimulate a personal, professional ethic that prizes life-long learning and professioal growth as an Army professional.

Structure of the Course: MX400 Officership builds upon the CLDS curriculum, especially the core curricula of the academic, physical, and military programs. The course interweaves three broad, interrelated themes – battle command, military professionalism, and military leadership—to highlight the four clusters of expert knowledge that undergird the Army’s core competencies and the professional responsibilities of an Army officer.
