TWO WEST POINT CADETS NAMED TRUMAN SCHOLARS – March 30, 2010

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation announced today that Cadets Kelly MacDonald, 21, Carlisle, Pa., and Marc Beaudoin, 22, Augusta, Maine, have earned a 2010 Truman Scholarship.

They are two of 60 students from 56 U.S. colleges and universities to be selected for the prestigious scholarship and will have the opportunity to further their education with a scholarship valued at approximately $30,000 for two years at any accredited university in the world.

“Marc Beaudoin and Kelly MacDonald are tremendous representatives of West Point's Corps of Cadets and highly deserving recipients of Truman Scholarships.  Our cadets continue to receive great recognition in national and international scholarship competitions.  This is an acknowledgment of the hard work and dedication of our students and the commitment of our faculty,” said Dean of the Academic Board, Brig. Gen. Patrick Finnegan.

“Receiving a Truman Scholarship is an honor, and I'm excited for the opportunity to continue my education beyond West Point,” said MacDonald, a Life Science major, who plans to attend medical school before earning a Master of Public Health.

“Winning the Truman Scholarship is an amazing opportunity to be part of a great organization.  This scholarship will allow me to gain expert knowledge that I hope to use in the future while leading soldiers in combat,” said Beaudoin, an International History major, who plans to earn a Master of African Studies from Yale University, New Haven, Conn.

The Truman Scholarship Foundation was established by Congress in 1975 as the federal memorial to our 33rd President. The Foundation awards scholarships for college students to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in government or elsewhere in public service. The activities of the Foundation are supported by a special trust fund in the U.S. Treasury. There have been 2670 Truman Scholars elected since the first awards were made in 1977.

West Point cadets have earned 29 Truman Scholarships since first competing in 1992.
