Distance Learning For FirstiesFive hundred first class cadets participated in a video teleconference between West Point and Soldiers in Afghanistan as part of their MX 400-Officersip class on March 10. The VTC allowed the soon-to-be graduates to learn first-hand from junior officers about leading troops in combat. Major Gen. My Bags Are Packed, I’m Ready To GoCadet Julius Yu, Class of 2012, from Columbia, Md., packs his bag for a spring break trip abroad to China March 12. Not Your Typical Spring BreakCadet Chad Plenge, Class of 2011, leaps into Crandall Pool for scuba diving practice on March 9 in preparation for the Scuba Diving Club’s spring break trip to Egypt. Plenge and about 40 other cadets are spending their spring break, March 13-21, diving in the Red Sea. You can experience spring break with the scuba team, as well as other cadets and their teams (or clubs) by visiting their blog sites at Army Strong Stories. West Point Research To Aid AmputeesCadet Woo Do, Class of 2011, and John Kenneth Wickiser, Ph.D, assistant professor of Chemistry and Life Sciences, work in a lab in Bartlett Hall Feb. 2. The pair is developing an RNA-based drug that will stop painful bone spur growth in the limbs of amputees, and eliminate the painful treatment process of grinding down those spurs to treat the condition. Do, a life sciences major, hopes to branch in the medical corps and become an Army doctor. The study, being done in conjunction with scientists from the Office of Naval Research and Carnegie Mellon University, is expected to last 18 months. (Photo by Sgt. 13 Crowned Brigade Boxing ChampsCadet Danilo Garcia leads with a left jab during the first round of his match with Plebe Sean Staggs during the 2010 Brigade Boxing Open, Feb. 24, in Hayes Gymnasium. Garcia won the match giving him his third Brigade Open win and allows him to continue his quest for his third straight national title at the 125 weight class. Men's Basketball Bounces NavyThe Army Men’s Basketball team claimed the Alumni Trophy following a 69-50 victory over Navy on Sat. at Christl Arena. The Black Knights claimed the trophy and the “Star” game victory for the first time in eight years. Firstie Cleveland Richard paced Army with 15 points, his seventh straight in double-figures. Firstie Chris Walker chipped in with 14 points and seven rebounds. The Black Knights, 14-12 on the season, have two home games this week, Wed. and Sat., before the Patriot League Tournament begins. Yankees Bring World Series Trophy To West PointCadets and members of the West Point community snap pictures of the New York Yankees most-recent World Series trophy today inside Jefferson Hall. The Yankees brought the trophy to the U.S. Military Academy as a way of thanking the Corps of Cadets for its support this past season, the Yankees first in their new stadium. The Cadet Color Guard presented colors for the first game of the season, as well as the first game of each of the playoff series. In addition, the West Point Glee Club and Band have participated in pre-game events. Greg Mortenson Visits USMAPSGreg Mortenson, bestselling author of “Three Cups of Tea” and “Stones into Schools,” visited the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School Jan. 27. He shared his experiences in establishing 131 primary and secondary schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan with the cadet candidates and staff members.
