| Message from Parents Club Coordinator |
Questions about Acceptance Day have been coming into the office, primarily
about walking privileges. The guidance we received is as follows:
Acceptance Day Walking
Privileges: All Fourth Class Cadets are authorized to take walking
privileges after their last duty on Acceptance Day, 23 August 2008 and again on
Sunday the 24th. The uniform for Walking Privileges is White over
Grey. Plebes may take Walking Privileges to go into Highland Falls with
or without being accompanied by a parent or guardian. Fourth Class Cadets
may accompany their parents to their hotel rooms during walking
privileges. Those cadets who have parents or guardians staying in hotels
outside of the walking privilege limit may accompany their parent or guardians
to their hotel rooms, but most observe the following restrictions:
a. Fourth Class Cadets must travel directly from the
academy to their parent/guardian's hotel and back. Plebes are not authorized
to stop in order to shop, tour, visit, eat or engage in any other activity
while traveling between the academy and the hotel.
b. Fourth Class Cadets are not authorized to eat outside
of the below listed walking privilege limits in any location other than their
parent/guardians hotel.
c. Fourth Class Cadets are not authorized to wear
civilian clothes or Gym-Alpha while on walking privileges. White over
Gray is the only authorized uniform for walking privileges.
d. Fourth Class Cadets are not authorized to drink
(alcoholic beverages) during walking privileges regardless of their age or
location of their parent's hotel.
e. Fourth Class Cadets may remove their head gear while
eating during an outdoor picnic at the river courts, South Dock, Round Pond or
other picnic location.
f. Fourth Class Cadets that failed their record APFT are
authorized walking privileges in accordance with the above standards.
Fourth Class Cadets may picnic with
families at Round Pond, but must be transported by vehicle; they may not
walk along Route 293 to Round Pond.
Walking Privilege Geographic Limits: North - Main Post limits; South - Bear Mountain traffic circle (intersection of Routes 6 and 9W) when on foot; grounds of the Bear Mountain Hotel to include all state park facilities when traveling by vehicle; East - the Hudson River (boating is allowed within physical sight of West Point.) West- West side of Route 9-W (cadets may frequent those religious or business establishments located directly on the West side of Route 9-W.)

Parents of West Point cadets experience unique challenges as their sons and daughters undergo a rugged and demanding training program. Membership in a West Point Parents Club offers an opportunity for mutual support, fellowship, and access to useful information about the Academy and cadet life. At present there are more than 100 clubs throughout the United States and abroad.
