The Qualifying Medical Exam and Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) are two important hurdles; passing them will get you closer to admission. They indicate your fitness for athletic contests and military duty.

These exams can be scheduled after you have received access to your online Candidate Kit.

You will receive a letter from the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board, known as “DoDMERB.” It will give you the location and date of your exam. You will be scheduled at a civilian medical facility or at an Army, Air Force or Navy facility near your home. Afterward, DoDMERB will forward the test results to you.

Tip:  Take your medical exam as soon as possible. It can take several months to get qualified, if more information is needed. If you haven’t been scheduled by DoDMERB by the fall of your senior year, contact the Admissions Office.

You will schedule your CFA with your physical education (PE) teacher. The Candidate Kit has the test form and instructions you can forward in PDF format. Your performance in six events will be judged:

• Basketball throw (from a kneeling position)
• Cadence pull-ups or flexed-arm hang (women's option)
• 40-yard shuttle run (for time)
• Abdominal crunches (number completed in 2 minutes)
• Push-ups (number completed in 2 minutes)
• 1-mile run (for time)

Afterward, the teacher will submit your score sheet online to the Admissions Office.

Who can administer the CFA besides my PE teacher?

• Physical Education Teacher
• Military Academy Liaison Officers
• Military Officers or Noncommissioned Officers
• Professors of Military Science
• J/ROTC Instructors

Tip:  Prepare for the CFA by practicing the six test areas. Running, general conditioning exercises and competitive sports will also strengthen your abilities.
