WEST POINT CONDUCTING WORKSHOP

West Point Concert Band



Participants will conduct the West Point Band (the oldest Army Band) with musical, interpretive and rehearsal technique suggestions by renowned conductor and professor Dr. Mallory Thompson. The workshop will conclude with the participants and Dr. Thompson conducting the Concert Band in a Gala Performance on April 9th, 7:30 p.m. in the historic Eisenhower Hall on the campus of the United States Military Academy. The Academy is located at West Point, New York, a one-hour drive North of New York City.

While the application deadline has passed for conducting participants and auditors, the workshop is free and open to the general public. Attendees will pay their travel, food and lodging expenses.

TRAVEL INFORMATION


PARTICIPANT

Participants will rehearse the West Point Concert Band, receiving coaching from both Dr. Thompson and Lt. Col. Holtan in preparation for a Gala Performance at the end of the workshop. Each Participant will be assigned literature from the following selections:

  • Concerto for Soprano Sax and Wind Ensemble, John Mackey
  • Colonial Song, Percy Grainger
  • Niagara Falls, Michael Daugherty
  • J'ai ete au bal, Donald Grantham
  • Gazebo Dances, John Corigliano

Participants will have approximately 60 minutes of podium time, divided into three sessions. All sessions will be recorded, and each Participant will receive a DVD recording with audio comments from the clinicians. Up to six Participants will be invited to the workshop.

AUDITOR

A limited number of Auditors will have a brief opportunity to conduct the West Point Concert Band in rehearsal for recorded comments from the clinicians. Up to 20 auditors will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.

In addition to the Participant and Auditor conducting sessions, the West Point Conducting Workshop will feature Dr. Thompson presenting seminars addressing various conducting and rehearsing challenges.

All sessions will be free and open to the public. Walk-ins are welcome and encouraged.
