Colonel Michael S. Yarmie

Photo of COL YarmieColonel Michael S. Yarmie was born in Brooklyn, New York. He enlisted in the Army in June 1976 and attended basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. After attending the West Point Prep School, he entered the United States Military Academy in July 1977 and in May 1981 he received a Bachelor of Science Degree and was commissioned into the Signal Corps.

Colonel Yarmie's assignments include: Platoon Leader and Battalion Maintenance Officer in the 141st Signal Battalion; Project Officer for the Army WMMCS Program Manager's Office; OIC for the Network Operations Center, DCA; Commander, 235th Signal Company (TACSAT); G-6, V Corps Artillery; S-3, 17th Signal Battalion; Plans Officer, V Corps G-3 Plans; Action Officer on the Joint Staff, J-6; Battalion Commander, 86th Signal Battalion; Deputy Commanding Officer 11th Signal Brigade, ACofS; G-3, NETCOM/9th Army Signal Command; Commander, 11th Signal Brigade; and most recently, the USARCENT G-6. As a company commander he conducted and led operational missions to locations such as Honduras, El Paso Texas, Miami Florida, Puerto Rico and Southwest Asia supporting JTF B's Guardrail mission, JTF 4's and JTF 6's drug interdiction missions, and Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Subsequently, as an operational planner, Colonel Yarmie also deployed to Taszar, Hungary as the USAREUR FWD Lead Planner for Operation Joint Endeavor in Bosnia. As a Battalion Commander he led his unit on a variety of missions to include the 11th Signal Brigade's communications Task Force to East Timor. While serving as Brigade Commander, he trained and deployed his Brigade to support numerous missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Colonel Yarmie assumed the duties as West Point's 28th Chief of Staff in August 2008. His military education and schools include the Signal Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Teleprocessing Officers' Communications Course, the Command and General Staff College, and the Army War College. Colonel Yarmie holds a Masters Degree in Strategic Studies.

Colonel Yarmie has been awarded the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Army Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Army Good Conduct Medal. In addition, he wears the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with three stars, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Humanitarian Services Medal, the Coast Guard Special Operations Service Medal, the NATO Medal, the Kuwait Liberation Medal from Saudi Arabia, the Kuwait Liberation Medal from Kuwait, and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award with two oak leaf clusters. Colonel Yarmie also earned the Ranger Tab, American and Canadian Parachutist badges, the Joint Staff Badge, and is a recipient of the Signal Regiment's Silver Order of Mercury and the Artillery's Honorable Order of Saint Barbara.
