On Saturday, 29 October, Professor Elizabeth Samet delivered the third annual Ulysses S. Grant Lecture at White Haven, the Grant Historic Site in St. Louis, MO. The lecture honors John Y. Simon, the late editor of The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant. Professor Samet's talk, "‘So plainly there could be no mistaking it’: Grant's Memoirs and the Language of War," focused on his depictions of battle as well as on the vocabulary used to describe nineteenth- and twenty-first-century warfare.
