To assist you in preparing for the physical challenges of Cadet Basic Training (CBT), provided is an overview of physical requirements and strategies to prepare for the range of physical challenges you will face over six weeks. A typical Physical Readiness Training (PRT) session will consist of a 10 minute active warm-up, 20-40 minutes of continuous exercise, and a 10 minute cool-down. Your days in CBT will begin at 0530 with PRT. Click here for the detailed PRT warm-up and cool-down activities.
You will run at various distances and intensities, including short sprints, hills and foot marches while carrying a weighted rucksack.
You can expect to foot march three miles in one hour with 20 pounds initially, then increase time, distance and weight every week. Eventually, you will work up to 12 miles in four hours with 35 pounds. Click here to learn more.
You will conduct push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, dips and other muscular strength and endurance exercises. Click here to learn more.
Your ability to conduct strict pull-ups or the flexed-arm hang in accordance with published standards in the CFA will be measured on R-Day and compared to your reported CFA scores.
The APFT consists of two minutes of push-ups, two minutes of sit-ups and a two mile run on flat terrain with a 10 minute rest period between each event. You are expected to pass the APFT the first and last week of CBT.
As a measured part of the APFT, you must meet Army weight standards for your height and gender. A healthy body composition and relative upper-body strength are crucial to CBT success. This will also be measured on R-Day.
Within the first week of CBT, you will swim 150 yards for time in a pool using any stroke. Your time will determine the level of survival swimming class you will take at the Academy. If you do not know how to swim, it is recommended and highly encouraged that you learn the basics before arriving.

Your training for CBT should start no later than 12 weeks prior to R-Day. Early and adequate physical preparation will provide you with the confidence and physical abilities necessary to successfully graduate CBT and reduce your risk of injury.
