MAJ Gregory Tily is a 1998 graduate of the United States Military Academy. At West Point he studied economics, and was a four year member of the varsity lacrosse team. MAJ Tily was a two time 1st Team Patriot League selection at midfield (1997, 1998). After his senior year in 1998, he was chosen as the Team Offensive MVP.
After graduation MAJ Tily was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Aviation Branch and attended flight school at Fort Rucker, Alabama. His first assignment was 3-6 Cavalry at Camp Humphries, South Korea, where he served as an AH-64A Attack Platoon Leader in C/3-6 CAV. After attending the AH-64D Supplemental course, he was assigned to 1-3 Attack Helicopter Regiment, 3ID, at Hunter Army Airfield where he served as an Attack Platoon Leader, Assistant S-3, Assistant Division Aviation Officer, and BDE Training Officer.
During his time in 3ID, he deployed to Kuwait, and later crossed the Kuwait/Iraq border for the initial push of Operation Iraqi Freedom in March 2003.
After attending the Combined Logistics Captains’ Career Course at Fort Lee, Virginia, and the Maintenance Managers Course at Ft. Rucker, he was assigned to 6-6 Cavalry at Stork Barracks in Illisheim, Germany.
In May 05 he assumed command of D Troop/6-6 CAV, later designated as D Company/2-159th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion. After a successful command in D Company, he assumed command of A Company/2-159th ARB in NOV 06. While serving as Assassin 06, he deployed his company and eight Apache Longbows to OIF 07-09 in Balad, Iraq where they conducted combat operation in support of Multi-National Coalition-Iraq. After command he served as the Battalion Executive Officer of 2-159th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion.
While stationed in Germany, MAJ Tily helped The Frankfurt Sports Club 1880 win a German National Championship (2005) and was selected to represent Team Germany in the Lacrosse World Games (2006) in London, Ontario Canada.
MAJ Tily is currently the United States Military Academy Preparatory School Battalion Tactical Officer (BTO) responsible for the academic, military, and physical development of cadet candidates preparing to enter West Point.
