Buffalo Open                    Nov 6,2011

-

West Point Prep wrestlers traveled to the other side of the state to compete in the Buffalo Open.  Lehigh, Edinboro, Pitt, and Buffalo were a few of the teams competing.  These are great wrestling programs, and our students got a chance to wrestle some great competition.  With two injured USMAPS wrestlers sitting out, we had four guys get their first taste of collegiate wrestling, and they did outstanding.  Travis Mallo (184) led the way taking 3rd; his only loss was to a Lehigh wrestler who is a returning NCAA finalist and currently ranked #2 in the country.  Bryce Barnes (197) took 5th after wrestling six matches on the day.  Michael Innes (149) took 8th after several come-from-behind victories where he displayed a lot of heart and will to win!  Austin Schafer (197) went 2-2 and unfortunately had to wrestle a USMAPS teammate in the consolation bracket.  This week we will work to get our team healthy, and build off our performance in Buffalo.

East Stroudsburg            Nov 12, 2011

Another successful outing for the West Point Prep wrestlers.  We traveled to East Stroudsburg University for the ESU open and came home with a champ, a runner-up, and several placers.  Travis Mallo was 1st at 184 with a huge win over Navy Prep in the semi-finals, Conor Youtsey was 2nd at 125, Tanner Mann was 5/6th at 133 (they did not wrestle the 5/6th place bout for the sake of time), Bryce Barnes was 5/6th at 197, and Austin Schafer was 5/6th at 285.  Overall, it was a strong performance and another building block in their quest to become outstanding wrestlers at West Point.

Navy Prep    Nov 19,2011

West Point prep wrestling team traveled to Navy Prep for their first dual (of two) between NAPS and Army Prep.  They started off the match with two forfeits at 125 and 133 giving USMAPS a 12-0 start (CC’s Michael Glasgow and Conor Youtsey each had forfeits).  Momentum quickly turned in the other direction as NAPS won six straight matches.  CC Akil Kizzie started things off but got beat at 141. CC Michael Innes fought through a very painful rib injury to finish the match and drop a decision at 149.  CC Brett Benedict lost a heartbreaker at 157.  CC Lynn McCrum wrestled his first match ever but lost at 165.  CC Jessie Lass fought hard the entire match at 174 and kept from giving up the pin.  CC Travis Mallo made a few “freshman mistakes” and was beat at 184 by the same wrestler he beat last week.  CC Bryce Barnes closed out the last match wrestled with a strong performance, giving Army Prep a major decision.  CC Austin Schafer received a forfeit at 285 to bring the final score to 32-22 NAPS.
