Research Program & Centers

The Department Research Program has three goals:

  1. Promote, facilitate and integrate faculty and cadet research across the department.
  2. Connect IAD(A) research (away game) with continued work at USMA (home game).
  3. Leverage three centers of excellence, tremendous Title 10 civilian faculty experience, and collaborations with DoD/DoE/University laboratories for cutting-edge opportunities ranging from fundamental science to applied DoD research.

Research Centers

Nuclear Science and Engineering Research Center (NSERC)
The Nuclear Science and Engineering Research Center (NSERC) is a Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) office located at the United States Military Academy (USMA) which exists to facilitate Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD) research at the Department of Defense degree-granting institutions. These institutions include the USMA, the United States Naval Academy (USNA), the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), and the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). The NSERC leverages faculty, cadet, and midshipmen academic expertise in the solution of problems of interest to the CWMD community and by doing so, enhance relevant research opportunities to the warfighter while simultaneously allowing these current and future leaders to develop awareness of technical and political aspects of weapons of mass destruction. Within DTRA, the NSERC falls under the Nuclear Technologies Department of the Research and Development Directorate (RD).The NSERC provides students and faculty with the opportunities and resources to solve problems of national interest in support of the DTRA CWMD portfolio. The NSERC develops and coordinates summer internship experiences that are continued as individual studies, capstone projects and theses during subsequent academic years. Students and faculty who perform research for the NSERC have the opportunity to publish technical reports, peer-reviewed papers and present conference talks.

Space and Missile Defense Command Space and High-Altitude Research Center (SMDC-SHARC)
The Space and Missile Defense Command's Space and High-Altitude Research Center (SHARC) within the Physics and Nuclear Engineering Department at West Point is a prominent research center within the DoD Degree Granting School Network for the development, study, and experimentation of strategic capabilities for support of the tactical ground warfighter, while mentoring and ensuring the current and next generation of leaders are cognizant of the Space, Missile Defense, and High Altitude domains.

Photonics Research Center (PRC)
Our original research center, the Photonics Research Center of Excellence, is a cooperative venture between ourselves, the Departments of Chemistry and Life Science and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the Army Research Office, and the Army Research Laboratory. The PRC also serves as a conduit for research at West Point into laser and photonics applications for other DoD agencies.
