Sociology

Major

The study of sociology investigates human behavior, cognition, group dynamics, and social institutions by analyzing the complex interactions between environmental, social, and cultural influences.

Offered by the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership.

Sociology is concerned with the scientific study of social groups and human interaction.  Army Sociology is concerned with the following:

  • ameliorating social problems
  • empiricism
  • ethnography
  • locality
  • reform of the human condition
  • providing a window to the world of human experiences
  • highlighting the intersections of human experience
  • emphasizing how individuals are contextually embedded
  • challenging the common sense with the ironic
  • providing a just voice for our subjects of study

The Sociology Program is one of the best kept secrets at West Point.  We like it this way.  We have a small number of cadets committed to their studies in rigorous and practical ways.  Cadets receive individual attention to make the best of the education and their experience at West Point.  Moreover, it provides a foundation in critical and creative thinking and written and oral analysis that serves our cadets well in the Army, graduate school and beyond.
