MAJ Colin Brodmerkel

Operations Officer, Military Science & Training


Major Colin Brodmerkel was raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He is married to Dr. Mara Kraenzlin, an Emergency and Critical Care veterinarian from Rye, New York. Their growing Family consists of two dogs, Bodhi and Moose, and one cat, Petrie.

Major Brodmerkel commissioned a Second Lieutenant from Butler University ROTC in 2009. Upon graduation from the Infantry Officer Basic Course in 2010, he was assigned to 2-35 Infantry Battalion “Cacti”, 3rd Brigade Combat Team. In April 2011, MAJ Brodmerkel deployed to Kunar Province, Afghanistan where he served both as a Rifle Platoon Leader (Bravo Company) and an Executive Officer (Charlie Company). Upon redeployment, Major Brodmerkel served as the Aide-de-Camp to the Deputy Commanding General - Operations, 25th Infantry Division.

Major Brodmerkel was next assigned to the First Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division and participated in the unit stand up of 2-23 Infantry Battalion “Tomahawks”. Major Brodmerkel activated and commanded Aztec Company from May 2014 through April 2015. He then commanded the Headquarters and Headquarters Company of 1st Stryker Brigade where he led them on their first validation at the National Training Center since transitioning from an Armor Brigade.

Major Brodmerkel currently serves as an Operations Officer within the Military Science and Training Division of the Department of Military Instruction at West Point. Prior to this he served as both the Course Director for Military Lab 200 (Cadet Field Training) and Military Science 200 (Fundamentals of Small Unit Operations).

Major Brodmerkel’s civilian education includes a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Butler University in 2009 and a Master of Science in Education in Curriculum and Teaching from Fordham University in 2017. He earned West Point’s interdisciplinary, two year, ‘Master Teacher Program’ certificate in 2019.

His military education includes Basic Officer Leadership Course II, Infantry Basic Officer Leadership Course, Stryker Leader Course, Airborne School, Ranger School, and the Maneuver Captain’s Career Course.
