Persian Program Director at West Point’s Department of Foreign Languages since 2013, where he has introduced many new courses including ones on Persian civilization and media, Dr. Irani-Tehrani is a native Persian speaker who grew up in Iran, Germany, and San Diego. He has studied political science and German at San Diego State University, Politik, Germanistik, and Iranistik at Universität Heidelberg, and holds a Ph.D. from NYU’s Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures with a dissertation titled: “Persian Figures in German Letters (1700-1900).” Dr. Irani-Tehrani has taught German languages courses at all levels at NYU and San Diego State University, where he also lectured on European Studies. Prior to coming to West Point, Dr. Irani-Tehrani served as Persian linguist and editor in Washington D.C., and Doha, Qatar. In 2009 he translated Noushin Ahmadi-Khorasani’s inside account of the women’s rights activists in Iran titled, “Women’s One-Million Signatures Campaign for Equality in Iran” (DC, 2009). Dr. Irani-Tehrani’s current area of research centers on the reception of medieval Persian poetry in late 18th and 19th century German literary sphere. He is Officer-in-Charge of the Persian Forum and the International Cadets Club, and an Officer-Representative for the Women’s Soccer Team. In his free time, he enjoys running, playing soccer, and reading for pleasure. He is an avid supporter of the Liverpool Football Club.
