Dr. Sherry Maggin is an Assistant Professor of Spanish and Academic Program Director of Spanish for the Department of Foreign Languages. She graduated from Gettysburg College in 2006 with her B.A. in Spanish and Classical Studies, and then continued on for her M.A. in Hispanic Literature at Villanova University (2008). She received her Ph.D. in Romance Languages with a concentration in Medieval Spanish Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2013. She began teaching at the United States Military Academy in the summer of 2013 and Dr. Maggin became the Academic Program Director of Spanish in the summer of 2016. Since arriving at USMA, Dr. Maggin has played an active role in the department, including creating the department’s Best Practices Brown Bag monthly series on foreign language pedagogy in 2014. She has also served as the Officer-in-Charge of the Spanish Language and Culture Forum (2013-2015), as the co-director of the department’s chapter of the Phi Sigma Iota Honor Society (2015-2018), and as the co-chair for the Department Image Design Team since 2017. She has served as a Department Academic Counselor for the Class of 2018 through the Class of 2020 and has also worked directly with cadets in numerous independent studies and capstone projects. Her service to USMA includes departmental representative to the Faculty Council (2014-2016) and to the Center for Teaching Excellence (2018-), as a judge for the Thompson Memorial Award for Writing Excellence, and member of the Best Practices Working Group for Remote Teaching. Her research interests include the topics of classical mythology and the soldier-scholar figure in medieval and early modern Spain as well as the use of digital spaces, including social media, in the foreign language classroom. She currently serves as the Social Media Coordinator for the International Association of Language Learning and Technology.
