**A brief background on Fort Putnam: In early 1778, Brigadier General Alexander McDougall was assigned as Commander and Colonel Thaddeus Kosciusko as Chief Engineer of Fortress West Point. By April 10, 1778 McDougall climbed West Point’s western hills to reconnoiter defensive positions; from his vantage point it was clear where they were needed. On April 11, 1778, Colonel Rufus Putnam was ordered to move his 5th Massachusetts Regiment to Crown Hill to construct a “redoubt” and the walls of Fort Putnam began to take shape. Fast forward…..after a century of neglect, Congress appropriated funds in 1905 for complete restoration of the fort; by 1909 Fort Putnam was restored, and in 1975 the findings of archeological research teams led to another renovation. Visitors today see Fort Putnam as close as possible to what it was during the Revolutionary War, except for somewhat of an interactive map inside the McLean House.
