Biography


Lieutenant Colonel Christian Klein joined the German Bundeswehr as a conscript in 1981 and continued in 1982 as an NCO. In 1984 he started his Officer career in the mechanized infantry (Panzergrenadiere). Within the Panzergrenadiere he went through all significant command and leadership functions across reunited Germany. He served as a Platoon Leader in Panzergrenadierbataillon 193 in Münster (Westphalia), as a Company Commander in Augustdorf, Münster, and Marienberg (Saxony), and as a Battalion Commander in the Panzergrenadierbataillon 294, in Stetten am kalten Markt (Baden-Wurttemberg). He also successfully completed several staff assignments at the operational and strategic levels within the Bundeswehr and NATO (Ministry of Defense, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe [SHAPE], I Corps [GE/NL], German Army Command), primarily in the fields of training, exercises, and operations. LTC Klein has served in a deployed capacity in 2002 as a Company Commander in the SFOR mission in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and in 2006 as a Battalion Commander in the ISAF mission in Kabul, Afghanistan. Since October 2019, he has been assigned as the German Liaison Officer to the United States Military Academy at West Point. His awards and decorations include the Ehrenkreuz der Bundeswehr in Gold, the Einsatzmedaille SFOR, and the Einsatzmedaille ISAF. Lieutenant Colonel Klein lives with his wife in West Point, New York.
