CPT Yevgen Gutman is a native of Odesa, Ukraine, and immigrated to San Diego, California, in 1997. Two years later, he enlisted in the US Army where he served as a medical supply specialist both stateside and overseas.

In 2009, CPT Gutman deployed to Iraq with the 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, his last enlisted assignment.

Completing Officer Candidate School in 2010, CPT Gutman received his commission as an Infantry Officer. After attending Infantry Officer Basic Course, Ranger, Airborne and Air Assault schools, CPT Gutman served as a Rifle Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer in 4-31 Infantry Battalion at Fort Drum, NY from 2012 to 2014.  From 2015 to 2016, CPT Gutman served as a Platoon Leader for a special reconnaissance team of Special Troops Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, deploying to Afghanistan in 2015.

CPT Gutman’s follow-on assignment was with 2nd Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany, where he commanded a Stryker and Headquarters Troop, supporting Operation Enhanced Forward Presence in Poland in 2018.

Upon selection to become an instructor at DFL at the United States Military Academy, CPT Gutman attended Columbia University in New York City, graduating in 2021 with a Master of Arts degree in Slavic Studies.

CPT Gutman’s awards and decorations include the Ranger Tab, Expert Infantryman Badge,  Expert Field Medical Badge, Parachutist’s Badge, Air Assault Badge, Meritorious Service Medal, and Army Commendation and Achievement medals. CPT Gutman lives on West Point with his wife, Cristina.
