Minor

This is the regional studies minor, allowing cadets to pursue interdisciplinary studies. Cadets can choose from six distinct minor tracks.

Middle East Track

Cadets who choose the Foreign Area Studies: Middle East major are not allowed to choose this minor. East Asia major are not allowed to choose this minor. Cadets in this minor can experience the Chinese language and culture through films, cuisine, or trip sections in the Chinese Forum.  Cadets can also apply to spend a semester abroad in Taiwan, at either Fu Jen University or National Tsinghua University or experience and summer Advanced Individual Academic Development (AIAD) Program in Chinese-speaking areas such as Taiwan, Singapore or China. Cadets may also apply to attend the Taiwanese version of Airborne School as a Military Individual Advanced Development (MIAD)

 

East Asia Track

Cadets who choose the Foreign Area Studies: East Asia major are not allowed to choose this minor. Cadets in this minor can experience the Chinese language and culture through films, cuisine, or trip sections in the Chinese Forum.  Cadets can also apply to spend a semester abroad in Taiwan, at either Fu Jen University or National Tsinghua University or experience and summer Advanced Individual Academic Development (AIAD) Program in Chinese-speaking areas such as Taiwan, Singapore or China. Cadets may also apply to attend the Taiwanese version of Airborne School as a MIAD. 

 

AfricaTrack

Cadets who choose the Foreign Area Studies: Africa major are not allowed to choose this minor. Cadets in this minor may enrich their experience through interaction with the French and/or Portuguese Forums where they can learn about language and culture through trip sections and other activities like summer Advanced Individual Academic Development (AIAD) Programs.  

 

EuropeTrack

Cadets who choose the Foreign Area Studies: Europe majors are not allowed to choose this minor. Cadets in this minor may enrich their experience through interaction with the French Spanish, German, and/or Portuguese Forums where they can learn about language and culture through trip sections and other activities. Cadets may also pursue immersion or summer Advanced Individual Academic Development (AIAD) Programs in France, Spain, Germany, or Portugal.  

 

Latin AmericaTrack

Cadets who choose the Foreign Area Studies: Latin America major are not allowed to choose this minor. Cadets in this minor may enrich their experience through interaction with the Spanish, and/or Portuguese Forums where they can learn about language and culture through trip sections and other activities.  Cadets may also pursue immersion or summer Advanced Individual Academic Development (AIAD) Programs in places like Spain, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, or Brazil.  Cadets can also apply for a Military Individual Advanced Development (MIAD) in Chile to take part in the Chilean Mountain Warfare School. 

 

Eurasia Track

Cadets who choose the Foreign Area Studies: Eurasia major are not allowed to choose this minor. Cadets in this minor may enrich their experience through interaction with the Persian  and/or Russian Forums where they can learn about language and culture through trip sections and other activities. Cadets in this minor can also pursue immersion or summer Advanced Individual Academic Development (AIAD) Programs in placed like Latvia, Georgia, Moldova, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, or Uzbekistan. Cadets can also apply for a Military Individual Advanced Development (MIAD) in the NATO-accredited Georgian Mountain Training School in the Caucasus Mountains.

The course of instruction for the Regional Studies Minor will consist of five courses that form a coherent, interdisciplinary study of a geographical region. Three of the courses must be in a foreign language at the 300 or 400 level. The other two courses must be regional or comparative course electives. Middle East Track

Cadets in this minor can join the Model Arab League and compete against other universities, or explore Arab language and culture through films, cuisine, or trip sections in the Arabic Forum.   Cadets can also apply to spend a semester abroad or experience an international Academic Individual Advanced Development (AIAD) program, USMA-run academic enrichment experience, in places like Jordan, Oman, or Morocco. 

 

East AsiaTrack

Cadets in this minor can experience the Chinese language and culture through films, cuisine, or trip sections in the Chinese Forum.  Cadets can also apply to spend a semester abroad in Taiwan, at either Fu Jen University or National Tsinghua University or experience and summer Advanced Individual Academic Development (AIAD) Program in Chinese-speaking areas such as Taiwan, Singapore or China.
