Biography


MAJ Devon Zillmer is currently an instructor in the most prestigious department at the United States Military Academy: the department of Mathematical Sciences.

He was born and raised in Southern California, and was commissioned a 2LT in the Infantry after earning a Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics, graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY, in 2010. Devon began his career at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and served as an Assistant Operations Officer, Headquarters Company Executive Officer, Assault Platoon Leader, and Rifle Company Executive Officer in the 82d Airborne Division. As the HHC XO, he deployed to Afghanistan in support of OEF XII.

Following completion of MCCC and finally graduating Ranger School in April 2015, Devon served a one year tour on the 2nd Infantry Division / ROK-US Combined Division Staff at Camp Red Cloud, ROK. He then PCSed to the Great Place, and served as the 2ABCT Maneuver Planner through the Brigade’s completion of its NTC Rotation 17-02. Devon took command of ABLE Company (A/1-5 CAV) in April 2017, and he then led the company through its operational deployment to the Republic of Korea. 2ABCT leadership assessed him in need of retraining, and so he commanded the Brigade Headquarters company from April 2018 through June 2019, including another NTC rotation.

While in command, Devon was accepted to teach in the Department of Mathematics, and he chose to attend the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. During graduate school, Devon submitted a VTIP to transfer to FA49, and was accepted. As a result, he pursued Masters Degrees in Applied Mathematics and Operations Research, while fulfilling the requirements to complete the NWC-DL ILE program and certificates of Secure Communication and Network Science.

Devon is married to Rachel, and they have two daughters and three sons.

  • Examination of geographical differences in obesity rates in the U.S.
  • Analysis of efficacy of learning styles on teaching.
  • Modeling bus/transportation flow via simulation in Python.
