Biography


LTC Patrick Mugg is an Assistant Professor within the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. He is currently teaching MA364 Engineering Mathematics, and has as also taught MA103, MA104, MA205, MA153 and MA255.

A 2003 West Point graduate, LTC Mugg was commissioned as a Military Intelligence Officer where he served as an Assistant BDE S2, Assistant BN S2 and BN S2 within various units of the 3rd BDE, 1st Armored Division. He deployed twice to Iraq with 3-1AD from 2003-2006. He then volunteered for a third deployment as the Intelligence Advisor on an 11-person National Police Transition Team (NPTT) advising over 600 Iraqi National Policeman. He also spent time teaching within TRADOC as a Senior MIBOLC Instructor prior to earning both his Masters (2010-2012) and PhD (2018-2021) in Applied Mathematics at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. LTC Mugg has served twice at the Academy from 2012-2015 and 2021 to the present. His most recent operational experience is from 2015-2018, where LTC Mugg served as a BDE S2 in the 82nd ABN DIV, a BN XO within the 525th Expeditionary MI BDE and as a Corps G2 Planner for the XVIII ABN Corps. He has recently transitioned from Military Intelligence to the Operations Research / Systems Analysis (ORSA) functional area.

His research interests are in numerical modeling and computation. Specifically, his focus is on multi-rate time-integration of systems of hyperbolic partial differential equations using a unified CG/DG approach for the spatial discretization of the initial boundary value problem. Other areas of research are in parallel computing.
