Biography


MAJ David Fobar is a third-year instructor in the Core Physics Program with the Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, from the University of Missouri Science and Technology in 2014 with a Masters in Science in Engineering Management, and from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor in 2018 with a Masters in Science in Nuclear Engineering. Upon commissioning MAJ Fobar served as an Infantry lieutenant in 1st Brigade “Bastogne” 101st Airborne Division, including a deployment to Afghanistan. He then switch to the Engineer branch upon reaching the rank of CPT and deployed to Liberia with the 36th Engineer Brigade “Rugged” in 2015 in support of Operation United Assistance. MAJ Fobar also served as the Brigade HHC Commander for the 85th Civil Affairs Brigade “Warrior Diplomats”. While at the University of Michigan, he conducted research and produced a technique for detecting trace amounts of chlorine on a stainless steel surface in hard to reach and hazardous areas. His work supplemented a larger project of remotely inspecting spent nuclear fuel dry cask canisters that are being used beyond their designed service life. His hobbies outside of the military are best described as being a “Maker”. As a junior rotator in D/PANE, CPT Fobar is involved in many projects spanning from Education Research, cadet independent research into machine learning applied to special nuclear material discrimination, even to designing and launching a rocket and cubesat into low earth orbit. MAJ Fobar is originally from Dearborn Heights, MI and his wife is originally from Helena, MT. They have two boys, Garrett and Lincoln, who happily keep them busy.
