Biography
Colonel David J. Phillips is an Academy Professor in the Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. He graduated from West Point in 1995 with a BS degree in Environmental Engineering and received a commission as a second lieutenant in the Engineer branch. He served as a Platoon Leader for the A/65th Engineer Battalion (Sapper), an Executive Officer for A/249th Engineer Battalion (Prime Power), and an Aide-de-Camp for the Deputy Commanding General, US Army Cadet Command. After his initial assignments in the Engineer branch, COL Phillips branch-transferred to the Medical Service Corps, where he became a Nuclear Medical Science Officer. COL Phillips served as the Deputy Chief, Health Physics, at Madigan Army Medical Center, then as the Chief, Health Physics, at Martin Army Community Hospital. COL Phillips next served a tour in Kuwait as the Radiation Safety Consultant to the Coalition Forces Land Component Command Surgeon. Upon return from deployment, COL Phillips earned an AM degree in Physics from Harvard University and an MS degree in Radiation Science and Protection from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. COL Phillips then served at West Point in the Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering as both an Instructor and Course Director. Following West Point, COL Phillips earned a PhD in Physics from the Naval Post Graduate School. COL Phillips then served as the Chief, Health Physics, at Madigan Army Medical Center. His next assignments were as the Chief, CBRN Sciences Branch, then Chief, Department of Preventive Health Services, at the US Army Medical Department Center and School. Additionally, COL Phillips served as the Nuclear Medical Science Consultant to the Army Surgeon General. In 2018, West Point selected COL Phillips as an Academy Professor, Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering. COL Phillips is currently serving in the department as the Program Director for the Core Physics program.
