About DMI Internships

USMA’s Academic Individual Advanced Development (AIAD) program is a key portion of the institution’s “Margin of Excellence Concept.”

The AIAD program enables cadets to perform research alongside leaders in organizations related to defense, government, policy, diplomacy, and national security. These unique experiences broaden cadets’ perspectives and provide them with practical advanced education related to their field of study to better understand real-world applications of security studies.

The purpose of an AIAD is to provide a venue for educational experiences that would not be possible within the usual framework of academic, military, and physical programs that comprise the 47-month West Point experience.

Cadets typically spend two to four weeks during the summer academic break (late May to early August), conducting academically enriching studies, service, research, and cultural immersions.

Some AIAD's will evolve into a strategic studies capstone project.

Past AIADs and Internships

Work at the cutting edge of defense innovation. Cadets partner with elite engineers at Lockheed Martin and top strategists from Army Futures Command to explore and develop emerging technologies—AI, autonomous systems, advanced manufacturing, cyber capabilities, and more. This hands‑on experience deepens understanding of U.S. military strengths and vulnerabilities compared to near‑peer competitors like China and Russia, highlights urgent capability gaps, and examines the technologies needed to close them. Cadets will analyze challenges to modernization across the military, defense industry, political processes, and the broader economy while considering practical solutions to accelerate future readiness.

A Japanese‑language–intensive internship at the Japanese Embassy focused on U.S.–Japan relations and Japanese security policy. Cadets support senior U.S and Japanese staff and accompany them to Pentagon and government engagements while gaining diplomatic and defense‑related experience relevant to future Foreign Area Officer duties.

Experience the FBI from the inside. Cadets will embed with federal agents leading the nation’s top criminal and counterintelligence missions, working alongside law enforcement and Intelligence Community partners at every level. Gain hands‑on exposure with elite teams—surveillance, SWAT, Evidence Response, technical units, and more—while learning how intelligence drives real‑world investigations. This internship offers an unparalleled look at federal operations and the legal framework that guides every investigative technique.

Experience the U.S. military’s premier unconventional warfare exercise. Cadets participate in Robin Sage—the culminating field test for aspiring Special Forces Soldiers—immersed in a dynamic environment of political instability, armed conflict, and complex problem‑solving. Working alongside DoD units acting as opposing forces and guerrilla fighters, as well as civilian role‑players, cadets gain a realistic look at irregular warfare and resistance movements. While the Irregular Warfare Club is the primary audience, numerous slots are available for all interested applicants seeking a challenging, highly immersive training experience.

Join Joint Modernization Command at the National Training Center for Project Convergence Capstone 6—the Army’s premier large‑scale experimentation event. Cadets will work directly alongside modernization teams as they test and integrate cutting‑edge concepts, emerging technologies, and joint warfighting capabilities in a demanding operational environment. This opportunity offers a front‑row seat to how the Army designs, experiments, and accelerates future force development across the Joint Force.

Work with the Joint Staff J6 in Suffolk, VA on real‑world C4/Cyber and CJADC2 modernization efforts. Cadets will research and analyze joint all‑domain command‑and‑control solutions, contributing to projects such as a Joint Data Catalogue for secure data sharing and a federated ICAM framework for streamlined, protected access across the force. This internship offers hands‑on experience shaping the future of joint warfighting.
