Behavioral Sciences & Leadership (BSL) Internships

About BSL Internships

The Department of Behavioral Sciences & Leadership offers a variety of international and domestic summer enrichment internship programs for cadets. Known throughout the academy as AIADs, these opportunities are carefully selected to ensure they create excellent opportunities for cadets to practice the skills they learn in the classroom and employ their leadership skills in new and often challenging circumstances. Our diverse partnerships include DOD, private, non-profit, research, and academic institutions both domestically and abroad.

Examples of BSL Internships

BSL offers exceptional military-focused internship opportunities with DEVCOM. Interns analyze survey data on artificial intelligence (AI) autonomous weapon systems used in combat operations, conduct qualitative analyses of soldiers' opinions on battlefield technologies, and engage in defense research at the Tactical Behavior Research Laboratory.

Projects include virtual combat environment experiments, psychophysiological studies on soldier perception under fire, trust in military AI systems research, tactical user interface evaluations, and combat medical research examining soldier self-efficacy during Care Under Fire scenarios. These hands-on experiences provide invaluable applied research skills while directly contributing to technologies that enhance soldier effectiveness, battlefield performance, and human-system integration in military operations.

The EMCOR Group internship offers BSL Management majors a comprehensive understanding of corporate strategy, directly translating to the complexities of military strategic planning. By rotating through functions such as Strategy, Mergers and Acquisitions, and Risk Management, cadets observe how large-scale organizations synchronize resources, mitigate global risks, and execute long-term objectives - processes that mirror the Army's strategic decision-making and operational planning.

Direct engagement with senior executives, including the chief executive officer and chief financial officer, allows cadets to see how executive-level vision is translated into actionable departmental goals. This experience equips future officers with the analytical frameworks and strategic foresight necessary to lead complex organizations and manage high-stakes military planning at the institutional level.

The Special Operations Technologies, Inc. internship is offered through BSL to provide cadets with hands-on experience in designing, testing, and evaluating innovative U.S. Army tactical gear that directly enhances warfighter capabilities. Through the complete product development lifecycle from concept to prototype, cadets gain critical insights into how technological innovation drives mission success and improves soldier effectiveness in combat operations.

Cadets play a vital role in the research process by providing feedback that shapes the next generation of military pack innovations, ensuring equipment meets the rigorous demands and operational requirements of the modern warfighter. This immersive experience equips future officers with the innovative mindset and technical expertise necessary to field superior equipment that enhances the lethality and survivability of soldiers on the battlefield.
