Walker, Bender earn Rhodes scholarships

Class of 2021 Cadets Evan Walker (left) and Tyrese Bender earned Rhodes scholarships in an announcement Nov. 21, 2020. The two cadets will study abroad for their master’s degrees at Oxford Unversity in England. Daine Van de Wall, first captain and U.S. Military Academy Class of 2020, was the last cadet to receive a Rhodes scholarship. The last time the academy produced two Rhodes Scholars in a year was in 2014. Born and raised in Rowlett, Texas, Walker is an Operations Research major and was the Cadet Basic Training regimental commander last summer. While at Oxford, she will read for a Master in Philosophy in Comparative Social Policy with a focus on the intersection between policy and inequalities in the workplace and their influence on social inclusion and mobility for racial and gender minorities. From San Antonio, Bender, who is currently the deputy brigade commander, is an Engineering Management major at West Point and he will pursue a Master of Science in Computer Science in Sociology and Evidence-Based Social Intervention and Policy Evaluation at Oxford. ...

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Cadets Tyrese Bender, Class of 2021, of San Antonio, Texas, and Cadet Evan Walker, Class of 2021, of Rowlett, Texas, were among the 32 U.S. Rhodes Scholarship awardees named Saturday.

Bender, who is an engineering management major, is the deputy brigade commander, and a two-year track team captain.

While at Oxford, he intends to earn a Master of Philosophy in Sociology and Evidence-Based Social Intervention and Policy Evaluation.

The Journey to Give Back: Aldhizer receives Thomas Young Award 

As West Point continues to produce multiple research projects to advance the Army warfighter, cadets at the U.S. Military Academy are constantly at work reaching technological breakthroughs that make those advancements possible. Class of 2021 Cadet Thomas Aldhizer is one of many cadets using his passion for physics to develop contingency measures to potentially safeguard the lives of Soldiers on the battlefield. Aldhizer has spent most of his tenure at West Point defining theories related to lessening the variability of swinging when a casualty is being hoisted up into a Medevac helicopter. This year, the fruits of his labor finally came with the Thomas Young Award for outstanding research in physics....

Cadet companies battle elements for 12 open spots for Spring Sandhurst

Blustery, chilly, frozen conditions with snowflakes occasionally falling from the sky welcomed the cadet teams preparing for the onslaught of tasks that came with earning the right to get to the spring Sandhurst Competition. The Fall Sandhurst Competition on Friday and Saturday was a battle among 39 teams, including all 36 cadet companies, two brigade teams and one U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School team around West Point and the USMA training areas. The competition determined which 12 teams would earn the USMA spots in the annual Sandhurst Military Skills Competition that takes place at USMA in the spring. ...
