Dr. Schultz was born in Los Angeles, CA, and spent most of his childhood in Pittsburgh, PA. He attended the Pennsylvania State University, where he earned his BS in Physics and BS in Astronomy (1988), as well as being commissioned as a second lieutenant in the US Army. He then attended the University of Wisconsin—Madison and earned a MS in Physics (1990), and a Ph.D. in Space Physics (1993). For his doctoral dissertation, he performed observations of a comet using a Fabry-Perot spectrometer at Kitt Peak, AZ. Upon obtaining his PhD in 1993, Dr. Schultz went on active duty with the US Army as a first lieutenant in the Ordnance Corps and was assigned to Ft. Polk, LA with the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment. While serving with the 2nd ACR, Lieutenant Schultz was promoted to captain and deployed to Haiti as part of the UN Mission in Haiti. In 1996, Captain Schultz was assigned to Korea and commanded the 2nd Maintenance Company (TMDE). Captain Schultz then joined the faculty of the Department of Physics at the US Military Academy in 1998. Dr. Schultz left the Active Army in 2003 and joined the US Army Reserves as a Force Integration Officer with the 99th Regional Readiness Command in Pittsburgh, PA. His civilian job was the Director of Physics Laboratories in the Department of Physics at Case Western Reserve University. Captain Schultz was promoted to major in 2004. In 2005, Major Schultz was mobilized and deployed to Afghanistan as an Embedded Troop Trainer to help develop the Afghan National Army. After his demobilization in 2006, Dr. Schultz left Case Western Reserve University to become the Supervisory Physicist in the Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering at the US Military Academy. He also left the 99th Regional Readiness Command to the 20th Support Command as a Reserve Nuclear Research Officer. Major Schultz retired from the Reserves in 2008. Dr. Schultz became a Certified Health Physicist in 2014.
