Fr. Gabriel Costa is a professor of mathematics in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the United State Military Academy (USMA), where he also serves as an associate chaplain.
He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1948 and raised in Hoboken, New Jersey. Costa graduated from Hoboken High School in 1966 and went to Stevens Institute of Technology (SIT) on a four-year scholarship. After graduation in 1970, he took a position as a teaching assistant at SIT, completing his master's degree in the spring of 1972.
After a year of teaching high school, Costa began studies for the Roman Catholic priesthood. He was ordained a priest May 26, 1979, for service to the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey. A year later, he was assigned to the faculty of the mathematics (now mathematics and computer science) department at Seton Hall University.
Costa received his doctorate in 1984. After receiving tenure as an associate professor, he took a year's sabbatical (1991-92). During that time, he was invited to present a talk to the Department of Mathematical Sciences at USMA. Since then, Cost has spent three previous tours at USMA: 1992-93, 1995-96, 1999-2001.
He presently is on an extended academic leave from Seton Hall University.
