LTC(R) James Jones is an instructor in the United States Military Academy Preparatory School's (USMAPS) Department of Mathematics in West Point, New York.
He grew up in Sultan, Washington, and enlisted in the Army in 1986. He graduated from USMAPS in 1989 and later from the United States Military Academy in 1993, earning a Bachelor of Science in engineering management and commissioning as an aviation second lieutenant. He completed a Master of Science in industrial engineering from the University of Washington.
While on active duty, LTC Jones served as a math instructor at USMAPS from 2003-05 and as an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences from 2008-12 and 2014-16, where he was the program director for MA100/101 “Rock Math.”
His military assignments included combat deployments to Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan, as well as overseas tours in Germany and Alaska. LTC Jones retired in 2016 as a lieutenant colonel after 26 years of active-duty service.
He rejoined the USMAPS team as a math instructor in 2021 and volunteers as a faculty sponsor for the golf and gaming clubs.
