Lieutenant Colonel Dan Koban is an assistant professor in the Department of Systems Engineering. Dan earned his PhD in Systems Engineering from the George Washington University.
Dan graduated from the United States Military Academy in 2004 and majored in Engineering Management. He commissioned into the Infantry and served in various leadership and staff positions at the 101st Airborne Division, including infantry platoon leader, company executive officer, assistant battalion operations officer, and assistant brigade intelligence officer in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). Following his time at Fort Campbell, he commanded a headquarters company in the 49th Quartermaster Group in Fort Lee, Virginia.
He previously taught in the Department of Mathematical Science at West Point from 2014-2017 after earning a masters degree from North Carolina State. He served the following years as an operations research systems analyst for the Army Intelligence staff working on data science modernization efforts. He also deployed as an analytic methodologist and served as the team leader for a Tactical Data Exploitation Team in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF)
His PhD research focused on evaluating the efficacy of a public health communication intervention that was motivated by leading theory of medical decision making, fuzzy-trace theory. Dan research interests focus on the application of data science to support intelligence analysis.
