LTC Dan Koban is an assistant professor in the Department of Systems Engineering at the United States Military Academy (USMA), where he also directs the Systems Design & Analysis Center.

He graduated from USMA in 2004 and majored in engineering management. He commissioned into the Infantry and served in various leadership and staff positions at the 101st Airborne Division, including infantry platoon leader, company executive officer, assistant battalion operations officer, and assistant brigade intelligence officer in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Following his time at Fort Campbell, he commanded a headquarters company in the 49th Quartermaster Group at Fort Lee, Virginia.

LTC Koban taught in USMA's Department of Mathematical Sciences from 2014–17 after earning a master’s degree from North Carolina State University. He served the following years as an operations research systems analyst for the Army Intelligence staff working on data science modernization efforts. He also deployed as an analytic methodologist and served as the team leader for a Tactical Data Exploitation Team in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

LTC Koban Dan earned his doctorate in systems engineering from George Washington University. His research focused on evaluating the efficacy of a public health communication intervention that was motivated by leading theory of medical decision-making, fuzzy-trace theory. Dan’s research interests focus on the application of data science to support intelligence analysis.
