About registered dietitians and board-certified specialists in sports dietetics

Registered dietitians (RDs) are food and nutrition experts who have met the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s (CDR) criteria to earn the RD credential. RDs work in various employment settings, including health care, business and industry, community/public health, education, research, government agencies and private practice.

RDs who hold board certification as a Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) have specific knowledge, skills, and experience for competency in sports dietetics practice. This credential is the premier professional sports nutrition credential in the United States. Initial certification requires documentation of 2,000 hours of sports dietetics practice within the past five years. CSSDs apply sports nutrition science to fueling fitness, sport, and athletic performance.
