MAJ William J. Schmidt is an instructor in the Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering at the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY. He graduated from USMA in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics. He commissioned as an engineer officer who served in the 21st Brigade Engineer Battalion, 3rd BCT (Rakassan), 101st Airborne (Air Assault) in Fort Campbell, KY as a platoon leader, executive officer, and battalion reconnaissance officer. He then completed the Special Forces Qualification Course and served in 3rd Special Forces Group as a Detachment Commander, Assistant Operations Officer, and Executive Officer. He earned a Master of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering from Texas A&M University in 2024. His research at Texas A&M focused on radiation detection using silicon photomultipliers. Major Schmidt is married to Megan Schmidt; together, they have three children. His hobbies include running and woodworking.
