The mission of the Department of Mathematical Sciences is to educate and inspire cadets in the mathematical sciences so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country, and to support the development of cadets and faculty for careers of professional excellence and service to the nation as officers in the United States Army or leaders in their profession.
ABOUT THE MATH DEPARTMENT
The Department of Mathematical Sciences has had a rich history of contributing to the education of cadets as confident problem solvers and of developing its faculty as effective teachers, leaders, and researchers. The story of mathematical education at West Point is full of interest: faculty curriculum developments, teaching methods and tools, and technological equipment. Many of the Department's advances have been exported outside the Academy to be utilized by other civilian and military educational institutions.
The Math Department provides several opportunities for faculty development and participates in several national Mathematical organizations. The Math Department sponsors a chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, organizes and hosts on-line, international Problem of the Week competition and hosts several mathematical and pedagogical seminars throughout the semester. The Math Department also awards fellowships to active duty military officers who are actively engaged in the study of mathematics via the Omar N. Bradley Officer Research Fellowship.
