About the Department

The mission of the Department of Mathematical Sciences is to educate and inspire cadets in the mathematical sciences so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the Army Values and to support the development of cadets and faculty for careers of professional excellence and service to the Nation as officers in the United States Army or leaders in their profession.

Majors

Mathematical Sciences offers majors for cadets interested in Applied Statistics and Data Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Operations Research. Majors determine course requirements and academic timelines as well as the type of career or branch that a cadet may choose to pursue after USMA graduation.

Minors

Minors offered by the Department of Mathematical Sciences allow cadets to explore other areas of interest while still pursuing their academic major. These options allow cadets to choose a minor that either complements their major or adds another potential career path after graduation.

Research

The Math Department supports a vibrant research program for cadets majoring in Math, Operations Research, and Applied Statistics and Data Science. All majors complete a senior thesis or equivalent project, often sponsored by external partners who provide real-world problems, technical mentorship, and insight into how applied mathematics drives innovation across industry, government, and the Army.

Research topics include mathematical modeling, optimization, statistics, data science, AI/ML, NLP, computer vision, and engineering math. Many cadets begin research early through independent study, accelerating their development as technical professionals and junior Army leaders, and often preparing them to compete for national and international scholarships. Internships

The Department of Mathematical Sciences provides an engaging summer Academic Individual Advanced Development (AIAD) program for majors in Mathematics, Operations Research, and Applied Statistics and Data Science. Through partnerships with government labs, industry leaders, and military organizations, cadets gain practical experience applying advanced mathematics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science to real-world challenges.
