About the Center

The Mathematical Sciences Center (MSC) serves as a focal point for advancing mathematical research and education at West Point. By combining the expertise of a diverse military and civilian faculty with the curiosity and enthusiasm of cadets, the MSC extends the application of mathematics beyond the classroom to support the Army and Department of Defense. Research areas include mathematical modeling, network analysis, data science, and algorithm development for robotics.

Central to the MSC is its strategic partnership with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Army Research Laboratory (DEVCOM ARL). This collaboration provides cadets and faculty with opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research through programs such as the Academic Individual Advanced Development (AIAD), the Davies Fellowship, and the ARL Visiting Scientist Program. Many cadets continue their research into the academic year through capstone projects aligned with their majors.

Through these initiatives, the MSC contributes to cadet education, faculty development, and the academy’s mission of preparing future Army officers to solve complex problems in a rapidly changing world.
