About the World Languages Majors
Cadets from the Department of English and World Languages (DEWL) can choose from one of eight majors, then follow a track of courses designed to develop their proficiency in their chosen language, to include development of cultural understanding.
Arabic Major
As an Arabic major, you will develop your linguistic interest and aptitude by broadening and deepening your mastery of one of civilization’s great cultures. The Middle East is the cradle of civilization, the birthplace of the world’s three great monotheistic religions, and stands at the center of both the global economy and many of the key strategic military and political alliances of the United States.
Chinese Major
The Chinese Section, DEWL at West Point offers Cadets of all language ability the opportunity to improve their language skills and regional knowledge. Our program is designed to develop those just starting to study Chinese and those with previous experience.
French Major
The French Section, DEWL at West Point offers Cadets of all language ability the opportunity to improve their language skills and regional knowledge. Our program is designed to develop those just starting to study French and those with previous experience.
German Major
The German Section of the Department of English and World Languages at West Point offers Cadets of all language abilities the opportunity to improve their language skills and regional knowledge. Our program is designed to develop those starting from the beginner level, as well as those with advanced German skills.
Persian Major
The sphere of influence of the Persian language and culture, or the Persianate World, stretches from China in the East through Central Asia to Georgia and Azerbaijan in the north, the Persian Gulf in the South, and Kurdistan in the West. As a Dual Language or Area Studies Middle East (Persian) major, you will develop your linguistic skills and gain an understanding of the cultures at the crossroads of history and civilization. You will also receive a strong complement of multi-disciplinary courses from other departments in order to contextualize and deepen your knowledge of the region.
Portuguese Major
As a Portuguese language major, you will follow a track of courses designed to develop your Portuguese language proficiency and cultural understanding. These courses will focus on language, culture and life in the Lusophone World.
Russian Major
As a Russian language major, you will follow a track of courses designed to develop your Russian language proficiency and cultural understanding. These courses will focus on language, culture, and Russian life. You may also have the opportunity for academic travel to Russian-speaking places such as Kazakhstan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Armenia, or Latvia.
Spanish Major
As a Spanish language major, you will follow a track of courses designed to develop your Spanish language proficiency and cultural understanding. These courses will focus on language and cross-cultural competency. You may also have the opportunity for academic travel to Spanish-speaking areas such as Spain, Chile, Mexico, or Colombia.
