CPT Derek Swanson

CPT Derek Swanson is an instructor in the Department of Systems Engineering and the Operations Research Center at the United States Military Academy (USMA). He also serves as an academic counselor for the department's Engineering Management program.

Commissioned as an artillery officer in May 2016, he served as a fire support officer, fire direction officer, and battery executive officer while assigned to 3-7 FA, 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division in Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, completing numerous multinational operations. After completing the Field Artillery Captain’s Career Course, he commanded the Northern Iowa Recruiting Company based out of Waterloo, Iowa.

CPT Swanson earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from USMA in 2016 and a master’s degree in business administration from the Duke Fuqua School of Business in 2024.

He is married to Jenna Swanson. They have a son, Beckett.
