LTC Donald Koban, Ph.D.

LTC Dan Koban is an assistant professor in the Department of Systems Engineering. Dan earned his Ph.D. in systems engineering from the George Washington University.

Dan graduated from the United States Military Academy in 2004 and majored in engineering management. He commissioned into the Infantry and served in various leadership and staff positions at the 101st Airborne Division, including infantry platoon leader, company executive officer, assistant battalion operations officer, and assistant brigade intelligence officer in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Following his time at Fort Campbell, he commanded a headquarters company in the 49th Quartermaster Group at Fort Lee, Virginia.

He previously taught in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at West Point from 2014–17 after earning a master’s degree from North Carolina State University. He served the following years as an operations research systems analyst for the Army Intelligence staff working on data science modernization efforts. He also deployed as an analytic methodologist and served as the team leader for a Tactical Data Exploitation Team in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

His Ph.D. research focused on evaluating the efficacy of a public health communication intervention that was motivated by leading theory of medical decision-making, fuzzy-trace theory. Dan’s research interests focus on the application of data science to support intelligence analysis.
