Dr. Hasan Shahid, Ph.D.

Dr. Hasan Shahid is an assistant professor in the Department of English & World Languages at the United States Military Academy.
He graduated with a doctorate and a master's degree in Portuguese and Brazilian studies from Brown University. His dissertation examined how 20th- and 21st-century Brazilian writers have discussed the place of Muslims and Islamic culture in Brazil. Prior to beginning his doctoral coursework, he earned both a master's degree in Latin American studies and a bachelor's degree in sociology and political science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Shahid has taught Portuguese from the novice to advanced levels in a variety of academic settings, teaching Portuguese both as a second language at Brown University and Middlebury College and as a heritage language at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. He has also taught beginner Spanish to speakers of Brazilian Portuguese.
