Greene served in the active Army for ten years, the last four of which he taught English at the United States Military Academy Preparatory School (USMAPS). He returned to USMAPS as a civilian in 2003. In 2015, following deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, J.R. retired as a colonel from the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
