CPT John Shumar

CPT John Shumar is an instructor in the Department of History & War Studies at the United States Military Academy (USMA) in West Point, New York.

The Prince George, Virginia, native graduated from USMA in 2017. His first assignment as an armor officer was with 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment in Fort Carson, Colorado, where he served as a reconnaissance platoon leader and executive officer.

In 2021, CPT Shumar attended the Maneuver Captains Career Course at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was then assigned to 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment, serving as A troop commander in 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, KY, from December 2021 to April 2023. He then served as company commander for 3rd Brigade's headquarters and headquarters company from May 2023 to May of 2024. CPT Shumar also served as liaison officer to the Romanian Army in Bucharest in support of Operation European Assure, Deter, and Reinforce.

CPT Shumar earned a master's degree in history from the University of New Hampshire in 2026.

He married his wife Rachel in 2017. They have two sons Jonah and Elliot, and one daughter Natalie.
