CPT Leo Matthews is an instructor of American politics in the Department of Social Sciences at West Point. His research interests include civil-military relations, counterterrorism strategy and AI applications for military intelligence.

An intelligence officer by trade, he served with the 1st Ranger Battalion from 2018–22 and completed three deployments to Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. Prior to that assignment, he served in the 173rd Infantry Brigade as an infantry officer.

He holds a Master of Arts in security studies from Georgetown University and a Master of Science in civil engineering from West Point.

CPT Matthews and his wife, Dominique, have a son named Killian.
