Phil Barretto
22nd Command Sergeant Major
Command Sergeant Major Barretto, a native of Hawaii, enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1991. CSM Barretto attended Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia (known as Fort Moore since 2023), where he was trained as an Infantryman (11B).
CSM Barretto served in a variety of leadership positions from Team Leader to Command Sergeant Major. His assignments include 10th Mountain Division (Light), Fort Drum, NY; 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Fort Rucker, AL (known as Fort Novosel since 2023); 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, NC (known as Fort Liberty since 2023); United States Forces Korea, Camp Coiner, Korea; 25th Infantry Division (Light), Schofield Barracks, HI; 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, KY; 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, GA; 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, NY; 2nd Infantry Division ROK/US Combined Division; and most recently, Army North (Fifth Army), Fort Sam Houston, TX.
Command Sgt. Maj. Barretto deployed in support of Operation Restore Hope, Operation Uphold Democracy, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
His military and civilian education includes the Keystone Course, Nominative Leaders Course, Battalion and Brigade Pre-Command Course, Commandant’s Pre-Command Course, Army Force Management Course, Senior Legal Advisory Course, all levels of Non-Commissioned Officer Education System to include graduate of U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy (Class 61), Anti- Terrorism Advisory Course, Equal Opportunity Leaders Course, and Rappel Master Course.
Command Sgt. Maj. Barretto holds an associate degree in supervisory leadership from Hawaii Pacific University and a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Excelsior College. He also holds a certification in Homeland Defense Security and is pursuing a master’s degree in leadership and management with the University of Texas-El Paso.
His military awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (with one Oak Leaf Cluster), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), Meritorious Service Medal (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Achievement Medal (with four Oak Leaf Clusters), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), United Nations Somalia Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge with one star, Expert Infantryman Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and is a member of the prestigious Sergeant Audie Murphy Club.
Command Sgt. Maj. Barretto has been married for 30 years and has three sons and two daughters.
