He commissioned as an engineer officer and earned a master's degree in engineering for sustainable development from the University of Cambridge as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar.Hume served in the 92nd Engineer Battalion at Fort Stewart, Georgia, before assuming company command in the 2nd Brigade Engineer Battalion at Fort Bliss, Texas.
