CPT Steven Johnson

CPT Steven Johnson is an Instructor in the Department of Systems Engineering and a member of the Systems Design and Analysis Center at the United States Military Academy (USMA).

He earned his bachelor's degree in systems design and management from USMA in 2017, while starting as a defensive back on the Army Football team, before commissioning into the Signal Corps with an Infantry branch detail.

Johnson’s first assignment was as an Athletic Intern for USMA's Preparatory School Football program. He then served as a heavy-weapons platoon leader with the 1-27 "Wolfhounds" in the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. While in this role, he applied to the 75th Ranger Regiment and was invited to attend the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP). After being selected, he served as a Ranger Signal Platoon Leader in the Regimental Communications Company from 2020-22, deploying twice in support of Operation Freedom's Sentinel, including Operation Allies Refuge, the noncombatant evacuation operation from Hamid Karzai International Airport.

Following redeployment and prior to attending the Captain's Career Course, Johnson was invited to remain in the 75th Ranger Regiment without first returning to the conventional force, a rare distinction. He subsequently completed RASP a second time and was selected to serve as the Battalion Signal Officer for 3rd Ranger Battalion from 2022-24. While serving in this capacity, he deployed to the Horn of Africa, the Middle East, and the Philippines, all in support of U.S. Special Operations Command.

He holds a Master of Science in Engineering and Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he also conducted national security research within MIT Lincoln Laboratory's Cyber Security and Information Sciences Division.

He is married to Kristell, and they have one son, Sage.
