Dr. Kalkstein’s primary responsibility is faculty development for the Simon Center for the Professional Military Ethic, focusing on character development and pedagogy. She also supports the creation and implementation of character education programs and has spearheaded several initiatives at West Point, including redesigning freshman (plebe) character education and the character curriculum during Cadet Summer Training.

Dr. Kalkstein teaches psychology in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership. She has presented and published research on decision-making, health psychology, motivation, reading comprehension, academic integrity, women’s health and the scholarship of teaching and learning.

She is passionate about education—especially promoting creativity and critical thinking—and has professional interests in human-centered design, character development and leadership development. Dr. Kalkstein has taught a wide range of college courses across the psychology curriculum.

Before joining West Point, she served as a director of faculty development and as an assistant vice president of academic affairs at a previous institution. She was selected as a Fulbright Scholar in 2017-18.
