Dr. Enoch Nagelli is an associate professor and the director of Chemical Engineering in the Department of Chemistry and Life Science. He teaches General Chemistry I, II, and core chemical engineering courses. He is the principal investigator of an interdisciplinary research group of cadets majoring in chemical engineering, life science, and chemistry. He earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in Cleveland, OH, in August 2014, advised by Prof. Liming Dai. His Ph.D. dissertation is on the controlled synthesis, functionalization and assembly of carbon nanomaterials for novel energy storage and conversion devices through an Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) fellowship at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB).

Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Nagelli worked as a post-doctoral fellow on an ARPA-E project funded by the DoE on large-scale high energy capacity all-iron flow batteries at CWRU in the Electrochemical Engineering and Energy Lab under the mentorship of Prof. Robert Savinell and Prof. Jesse Wainright. In this role, Dr. Nagelli worked on the performance diagnostics of flowable slurry electrodes for redox flow batteries and electrochemical flow capacitors. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AICHE) and an Officer in the Environment Division of AICHE. He is also a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Electrochemical Society (ECS).

Dr. Nagelli currently serves a member of the ABET Accreditation Board for the Chemical Engineering program, and assistant Officer-In-Charge (OIC) for the AIChE club. He also serves as the Department Trusted Agent for Course End Feedback and a member of the Department faculty Selection Committee. He mentors chemical engineering cadets as a Department Academic Counselor (DAC) and serves as an assistant Officer Representative (OR) for the USMA men’s basketball team.

Current Research

Dr. Enoch Nagelli leads the Renewable Energy & Carbon Optoelectronic Nanomaterials (RECON) Lab as part of the Center for Molecular Science with major focus areas in the synthesis and engineering of 3D stationary, flowable and composite electrodes with noble metal and metal oxide particles for novel high performance small- and large-scale electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices and optoelectronics sensors. Moreover, his current research interests are on the design, scalability, and application of bench-top nanomaterials as 3D electrodes for rechargeable batteries and capacitors, redox flow batteries and flow capacitors, and fuel cells operating at higher power and energy densities. This will further the development of novel materials with high-performance to ultimately reduce the system mass, life cycle cost and increase the power capability. Therefore, this fundamental research on the synthesis and electrochemistry of nanomaterials and nanocomposites will facilitate the development of new 3D nano- or micro-electrode structures for novel energy storage and conversion devices.

Beyond energy applications, Dr. Nagelli has further extended his focus on materials to the characterization and modeling of the gas- and particle-phase thermal degradation products of fluoropolymers in munitions. The overall goal of this interdisciplinary SERDP funded study is to quantify and identify potential per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) evolved during the thermal breakdown of fluoropolymers at high temperatures.
