MAJ Michael Baker is an assistant professor of economics in the Department of Social Sciences (SOSH) and a Research Analyst in the Office of Economic and Manpower Analysis (OEMA). He joined the economics faculty at SOSH in fall 2021 and earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Notre Dame in 2022.
As the lead analyst in the Army Marketing Research Cell, he conducts research and data analysis supporting Army marketing and recruiting efforts.
Prior to graduate school, Michael served as an Armor officer for eight years in the 4th Infantry Division (Fort Carson, CO) and the 1st Infantry Division (Fort Riley, KS), with roles including Scout Platoon Leader, Troop Executive Officer, Squadron Logistics Officer (S-4), Assistant Brigade Operations Officer (S-3), and Troop Commander. His deployments include Afghanistan (2011), Kuwait (2013), and South Korea (2016-17). His military training includes Airborne School, Armor Officer Basic Course, Army Reconnaissance Course, Infantry Mortar Leader Course, Maneuver Captain’s Career Course, Cavalry Leader’s Course, and Ranger School.
Michael and his wife Heather have four children: Ella, Violet, Lily, and Caleb.
